Shifting Gears for Success

Dear Michael,
my son, 29, has just had a very disappointing experience. The company where he has been working in sales for close to three years have given him a yearly performance appraisal, but because of one quarter where he only produced 80% results according to them, he didn't get a raise. He is upset and demoralised because the periods where he believes he worked very hard and produced good results were not taken into account at all, as a matter of fact his prior years' performance was never even reviewed.
What would you suggest he does to get over the disappointment and to move forward without losing his motivation and trust in himself. He does seem to like the job in itself but seems not to have a particularly warm rapport with the management. This was a bit the pattern at school, btw, where he never really hit it off with his teachers or the professors in college. Hope a question via third party is OK with you because he is not here with me.
Thanks for your advice

I can only give a general answer to this, Janitrar - and that's to suggest that if he's interested in making a change going forward he reads the section in You Can Have What You Want about motivation and in particular about 'intrinsically satisfying actions'...
Hope it helps,
michael
