Comparing Yourself to Yourself
-
There is a Peanuts
cartoon where Lucy, Linus, and Charlie Brown are lying on the pitchers mound,
looking up at the clouds in the sky. The dialogue goes a little something
like this....
Lucy:
What do you see when you look at the clouds, Linus?
Linus:
Well, that cloud there reminds me of the ancient tomb of Nebuchenezzer,
and the smaller cloud to the left is reminiscent of God giving life to
Adam as portrayed by Michelangelo on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
Lucy:
Mmmm, that's very interesting Linus. What do you see, Charlie Brown?
Charlie:
Well.... I was going to say I saw a ducky and a horsy, but I've changed
my mind.
Today's
Experiment:
When we look at the success of others, it's easy to get depressed at how
far they seem to be in comparison to where we are. Fortunately, it's equally
easy to get inspired! Here's how....
1. Think
of someone who's got you "psyched out".
You'll know who they are because when you think of them, you feel bitter,
or depressed, or angry, or anything other than inspired.
2. Next,
think of someone you admire.
You'll know them because when you think of them, you feel "aglow"
with possibility and enthusiasm.
3. Imagine
that the two of them get together and compare notes on what has got them
to where they are today. You can make this imagining as vivid and detailed
as you enjoy doing it.
4. Now, join
them!
Have a conversation, out loud or in your mind, where you express to each
of them your feelings about them, their gifts, their success, and how
it affects you. Let the conversation be as positive or negative as it
needs to be to be honest. Carry on until you reach a resolution, usually
characterized by a feeling of ease and comfort.
This is a
potent exercise, so be kind to yourself and give yourself the time and
space to really benefit from it!
